Souter's cash took SNP to victory

The possibility that the SNP might win the election first appeared in June last year, and it stayed ahead through October to the turn of the year. It is easier to raise money when you are ahead." How can anyone say that Souter's money swung it? As an ex labour voter, I can tell you right now that it wasn't SNP 'advertising' that changed my mind.

Tech meets tough in LR3

When you take delivery of a new car, the salesperson normally sits in the passenger seat, spends a few minutes making sure you're familiar with all the controls, and then bids you good luck.

If you happen to be buying today's test car - a 2008 Land Rover LR3 - an hour's worth of classroom instruction would only be enough to touch on the vehicle's multiple systems and controls. That's certainly one reason the company includes a lengthy DVD tutorial along with the thick owner's manual. The DVD is must viewing for any new Rover owner - it has an amazing amount of technology incorporated into its innate toughness.

Last spring, I was able to drive several Land Rovers on an off-road course the company's marketers set up on the 25-acre grounds of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Endi cott House in Dedham.

Expo Daily Round-Up: iPod gadgets and other goodies

The sun has set on Macworld Expo 2008, and what a week it was. For me, it started with keynote-pundit stalking, then a day of cameras and printers, then a deep-geek dive into storage stuff, and finally—in this installment—a Friday of fun: speakers, docks, FM tuners, and other iPod gadgetry; and then a top-quality laptop microphone, a tricky lens for my digital SLR, and more.

Eye-Fi offers wireless memory chip for digital cameras

If you're like Clark, you snap a lot of digital photos and then have trouble getting them out of the camera and into the real world. He's too lazy to figure out how to hook up the cable to his computer to print them or upload to a website!

There's a new solution to this problem that's been getting some great reviews.

MWC08: Microsoft takes MSN Direct from your watch to your phone

I thoroughly enjoy using my T-Mobile Shadow Windows Mobile Smartphone and am also a bit of a fan of the MSN Direct SPOT watches. Microsoft announced a new service and application for Windows Mobile Smartphones (Standard, non-touch screen devices) that is available now for free as a Technology Preview. MSN Direct for Windows Mobile is available now for your compatible device. It does not work on Windows Mobile Professional (touch screen) devices.

MSN Direct for Windows Mobile brings you several of the feeds found in the MSN Direct watches, but since the data is being sent over the wireless networks and not over the same FM radio frequency that is used to send data to the watches there are some differences. You will be able to get news stories, weather updates, stock quotes, and sports news sent to you without any interaction necessary on your part.

Honda FCX Clarity: A glimpse at the future

Additionally, it's not actually a pollution-free vehicle, despite having a garden hose for a tailpipe. Creating the hydrogen stored in the car's fuel tank requires the burning of fossil fuels, usually natural gas. This is a similar dilemma plug-in hybrids face. The theory looks good on paper, but may create new problems on the current infrastructure in the near future. Furthermore, energy is lost when creating hydrogen initially and it's lost again in the conversion back -- an inefficient system for such an efficient vehicle.

However, Honda points out creating hydrogen fuel releases 60 percent less CO2 than gas cars generate in a wheel-to-well comparison. And Honda is experimenting with producing hydrogen fuel through solar and wind-generated means -- a method that could make the Clarity's total carbon footprint disappear.

Kosovo marks first week of independence

Every night that we lie in bed we don't know in the morning what is going to happen," said Jovanka Petrovic, among Sunday worshippers at Gracanica's Orthodox church.

"There is no more Serbia. We have lost everything," said Ana Ivanovic, another worshipper.

But ethnic Albanians exulted in their independence and held out hope that the unrest and uncertainty would subside.

"People keep celebrating every night," Artan Dedushaj said. "This is something that all Albanians have waited centuries for - and changes will come soon."
