C.U. Republicans Call for New Gun Policy

In the wake of last week's tragedy at Northern Illinois University and last April's massacre at Virginia Tech, the seemingly endless series of school shootings has incited debate over the safety of college communities across the country.

Yesterday, the Cornell College Republicans placed about 20 signs on the Arts Quad that publicized their stance on the increasingly polarizing issue of the concealed carry of weapons. They have joined the approximately 12,000 students nationwide who are part of a grassroots effort that is advocating for concealed weapons license holders to be able to carry their weapons on campuses.

Although prevalent on the Arts Quad during the morning hours, the removal of many of the signs by the afternoon conveyed a sense of disapproval from some members of the Cornell community who support the University's “gun-free zone" policy.

Advanced Technologies Key to Meeting Increased Demand for Grain

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Speaking at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Outlook Forum, DuPont Vice President and General Manager and Pioneer Hi-Bred President Paul Schickler said advanced technologies will be key for further corn and soybean yield improvement over the next 10 years.

"It is an incredible time for the agricultural economy as demand for food, feed, fuel and materials -- all of which can be produced through agriculture - - have increased," Schickler said. "We expect the traits and technologies in our product pipeline to help meet that demand by doubling the rate of genetic gain -- targeting a 40 percent yield increase in our corn and soybean products over the next 10 years."

Schickler explained that the corn yield increase will come from a convergence of elite germplasm, proprietary Accelerated Yield Technology(TM) (AYT(TM)), the new Optimum(R) AcreMax(TM) insect control system and key agronomic traits such as drought tolerance and nitrogen use efficiency.

2008 Nissan Navara - Solid Utility Vehicle

Competition is a great leveller in any marketplace. When there is competition, the consumer wins.

Case in point, Ford and its Ranger. The Ford Ranger virtually is a forerunner in the compact truck segment of the market. Ford realised that there was a market waiting for a strong small truck, that could fit in an indoor garage, and that wasn't as unwieldy as the full-size products. The concept fit 'hand in glove' with the market and the rest is history - the Ranger being one of Ford's best-selling formulas ever, with production beginning in 1982, and is only now being phased out; production stops in 2009.

However, a product like this becomes so popular, competing manufacturers have to copy and improve on it if they are to stay afloat. Soon, most major manufacturers had some revision of the formula; Toyota had the Tacoma, Isuzu had the P'up and Nissan had the SE.

UPI NewsTrack Health and Science News

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists have created carbon nanopipettes thousands of times thinner than human hair that can measure electric current and deliver fluids into cells.

University of Pennsylvania researchers said the tiny carbon-based tool can be used to probe cells with minimal intrusion and inject fluids without damaging or inhibiting cell growth. The nanopipettes might replace glass micropipettes that are fragile at small scales, can cause irreparable cell damage and cannot be simultaneously used as injectors and electrodes, the scientists said.

The carbon-based pipettes -- developed by Professor Haim Bau and colleagues -- range in size from a few tens to a few hundred nanometers and are said to be far stronger and more flexible than traditional glass micropipettes.

Beauty in black and white

If you're using iPhoto 5 or an earlier version of the program, switch to edit mode, and then click on the B&W button in the editing toolbar. In iPhoto 6, switch to edit mode, open the Effects palette, and then click on the B&W button in the upper left corner of the palette. For more-dramatic results, follow the B&W effect with the Boost Color effect (click on the middle right tile), which will increase the contrast in your image and provide a very slight warming tint.

Option 2: Reduce saturation

Each program also includes a saturation slider, which lets you quickly eliminate color information. In iPhoto 5 or 6, open the Adjustments palette and drag the Luminance slider all the way to the left.

To do the same thing in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, go to Layer: New Adjustment Layer: Hue/Saturation and click on OK.

Polaroid Says Goodbye to Instant Photo Technology

Polaroid, the company famous for their instant cameras and photos, has decided to shut down factories within the United States and abroad as they abandon the technology that made instant photos possible. Polaroid will cease all production of its film by next year.

It seems that the instantly gratifying Polaroid images have finally been done in by digital cameras and the endless Flickr pages full of digital images.

Polaroid's instant camera was first introduced in 1948. When it was first unveiled, it was large and bulky with a stainless steel body and black bellows, and the film came on a roll.

The next incarnation of the Polaroid instant camera came in 1963, when they introduced cartridge film with their 100-series camera. It became an instant hit with pro photographers, who would use the Polaroid to take test photos, and instantly use it to check lighting and composition.
