A Look Back At The Future Of Electronics

I have a professional photographer friend who spent $25,000 for a digital camera back in the 90s. Now you can get great pro-sumer cameras for under $800. At CES, Sony debuted its $699 Alpha DSLR-A100. Like the Canon EOS Rebel XTi and the Nikon D40, this is a full featured camera with interchangeable lenses sold as a kit with a starter lens. The new Sony camera features a 10 megapixel sensor, the ability to take up to 3 frames per second and the support for ISOs ranging from 100 to 3,200. What that all adds up to is a camera that can perform well in a variety of lighting conditions. Also, like the competition, it has image stabilization which compensates for our shaky hands, especially when using a long zoom.

Casio introduced one of the most innovative cameras at show. It isnt an SLR, but the new Exilim Pro EX-F1 has a 12X optical zoom and what Casio says is the worlds fastest burst shooting performance.

GIRL, 7, DIES IN QUAD BIKE CRASH

Young children, even as young as a 7 year old want all the latest gadgets and bikes, etc., whether they are appropriate for their age or not. Parents give in. These are both two very sad stories at Christmastime. My heart goes out to the parents.

Entries for January 2008

Forget the holidays. It's Sunday's Super Bowl that drives the most sales of HDTVs. The big game will have moved about 2.4 million high-definition sets into homes, according to research from an electronics trade group.

Perhaps more interesting, nearly half of viewers will use a PC or cellphone to check stats on the Internet, says the survey by the Consumer Electronics Association. That helps justify TV makers who are adding Web connections to their sets.

The problem is that TVs themselves are already too complicated. About 20 percent of people buying HDTVs don't get a high-def signal but think they do, according to another survey by Leichtman Research Group. They'll actually be watching the bowl in standard definition, which can sometimes look worse on a HDTV than it does on the old tube.

Hot Gadgets That Unleash Your Inner Geek

The holidays are a time for shoppers and wish-list makers to get in touch with their inner geeks.

They're in good company. Shoppers will spend $22.1 billion on holiday consumer electronics this year, according to a survey by the Consumer Electronics Association.

Leaked Intel Nehalem performance projections over AMD Shanghai

Servers News Hardware Processors AMD Intel Sun Workstations

It appears that the rumors about Intel's next major microprocessor "Nehalem" being a huge juggernaut may be true according to leaked documents from Sun Microsystems (get it before it's gone). The slides appear to be inadvertently placed on Sun's publicly accessible website and "jokerman" posted the link on Aceshardware (thanks to tip from ZDNet reader JumpingJack). The slides looks like the real thing meant for Intel's partners and they're probably well known in the server industry.

Reliable sources have reported in the past that Intel's Nehalem processor will have three channels of DDR3 memory per CPU versus two channels of DDR2 memory per AMD Barcelona or upcoming Shanghai processor.
