Obama's Hispanderama

Now I can shape the national political debate. The only way I could exert more influence would be if I were president."

David Brooks had a point! ... P.S.: And Mark Warner certainly seeems to not want to piss him off. ... 4:17 P.M.

"Jeez. Why are you spending so much time on Kos," I'm often asked by exasperated readers. "We come to your site for Burkle." Good point! ... In this month's Los Angeles, Steve Oney takes you inside Team Burkle as PR man Mike Sitrick and his billionaire client have a conference call to decide whether to tell the truth. ... P.S.: It turns out Burkle didn't actually write the WSJ op-ed piece that appeared under his name. It was "ghosted by Sitrick." Who knew? Needless to say, the piece called for stricter journalistic standards of ethics.

Coaches look for edge with sideline gadgetry

In the age of iPhones, Blackberrys, high speed Internet modems and every other technological advance never even dreamed of in the days of "Star Trek," high school football has joined the wave.

For fans on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons, the focus is on the 22 athletes on the field. But just outside the lines there's an ongoing technological revolution.

Equipment checks on game day go far beyond helmets and pads. Video cameras, audio headsets and laptop computers allow coaches to gather, communicate and analyze information faster than ever.

Far from camera shy

Film has largely gone the way of the dinosaur as the VHS tape is making way for the recordable DVD, and coaches end the practice day working with a machine that makes three DVD copies of a game at a time, all in about five minutes.

Popular Mechanics: Tech Clinic Expert Q & A - April 2006

And thanks to sophisticated error correction in most digital audio and video devices, minor interference can be fixed. As long as you stick with reputable brands and retailers, you shouldn't have any problem with cables of standard length.

A far more common problem is simply trying to use a cable that is too long. Every cable standard has a recommended maximum length. Cables that exceed these lengths require the use of a signal repeater. DVI cables, for example, can make it roughly 30 ft. unassisted, while, in our experience, HDMI can work at up to 50 ft. (There is no technical maximum length for HDMI.) It's easy to know if a digital cable is too long: You won't get an image. The picture may cut in and out, but the sound or video quality won't degrade. It's either transmitting signal or it's not.

Bill, like Hillary, has his share of fans

CORPUS CHRISTI — A woman from Pennsylvania visiting her daughter was the first Saturday to have her photo snapped cheek to cheek with former President Bill Clinton.

"I came for a vacation, then found out my favorite person in the world would be here," said Vicki Hartsek, 59, putting her hand over her heart. "I wanted to take him home with me."

Hartsek was among a crowd police estimated at more than 1,000 who came to see Clinton's 8 a.m. speech at Lions Park. His engaging reassurance of his wife's experience and commitment drew squealing, applause, laughter and chanting, "Hillary, Hillary, Hillary..."

The predominantly older crowd of Hillary Clinton supporters said they didn't want to miss the chance to see the former president.

"Whewwwwww!" screamed Mary Lou Cano, 69, shaking her flag purse like an excited schoolgirl.

Ten Days With Leopard: Coolest Cat Ever

The act of upgrading a MacBook from Tiger to Leopard was not without problems. Let's just say you should not proceed without first making a full-on backup. Once it's properly installed, however, Leopard shines. Spaces gives you a ton of extra desktop real estate, Time Machine will probably get more people to play it safe and keep constant backups, and smaller features just plain make sense.
